Jesus the final authority of our lives

Make Jesus the Final Authority In Your Life

•

Many Christians love church and love attending or volunteering, but many forget one important thing and that is making Jesus the final authority in your life. This is important for Christian people to understand that Jesus should be the ultimate authority in our lives. Consider this passage from Romans 6:

12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.” – Romans 6:12-14 (NKJV)

When Jesus isn’t the ultimate authority in our lives, it makes us vulnerable to sin. This is why Bible reading and prayer are so important. It’s not some checklist that God has in heaven to make sure we do what we’re supposed to do, but it’s our fuel for our lives to remain connected to Jesus. Think about your cell phone or your IPad. They are only useful if they’re charged right? If they don’t have a charge, they won’t turn on, and they can’t be used for all of the functions they offer. To be used again, they have to be charged by the charger and then they power on. The same is true for Christians. If we disconnect from our power source (Jesus) then we’re gradually going to see our spiritual batteries decrease and gradually we start to lose connection and usefulness for God’s kingdom until we recharge and get reconnected to our power source.

Our relationship with Christ should influence every aspect of our lives. We can’t just remove Jesus and leave him at home when we go to work or to the store or to the restaurant. We represent Him with our actions, with our words, and with our attitudes. Our relationship with Him should also impact our decision making. Are you searching for a car, a house, a job, or a spouse? Ask yourself a simple question: Have you prayed about it? We let so many factors influence our decision-making like money, convenience, benefits, or “better opportunities” – which is in quotes because a lot of times we use that as justification for doing something that God didn’t lead us to. But what does God want you to do, what opportunities is He opening up for you?

I’ll give you an example from my own life: My oldest daughter was looking for a car and I encouraged her to pray about it. As she was praying about it, I was also praying and trying to watch for God to answer that prayer. My best friend had asked me to feed his cat while he was out of town and I walk into his house and there’s a Toyota Corolla that looked fairly new sitting in his garage and I asked him about it. They were looking to sell it, in great shape, less than 100,000 miles on it, and my daughter could get it for less than $1,000. What a blessing! God answered that prayer and He used a long-term friendship and a willingness to feed a cat as the catalyst. We never know where God can lead us if we’re just obedient to Him.

What is God asking you to turn over to Him? Maybe there’s something in your life that you should be praying about, but aren’t. Turn it over to Him, remain connected to Jesus, and make Him the final authority in your life – even if you think it doesn’t make sense or you’re nervous. His ways are always the best and He promises He will never leave you nor forsake you. Trust in Jesus and let Him lead you.
